Parasphyraena was named by Switchenska (1968) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is not extant. Its type is Parasphyraena apscheronica. It was considered monophyletic by Ballen (2019).
It was assigned to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Sphyraenidae by Ballen (2019).
