Pliohippus potosinus

Taxonomy
Pliohippus potosinus was named by Ferrusquía-Villafranca et al. (2014). Its type specimen is IGM-7973, a partial skull (rostral fragment with left I1-M3 and right P2-M2), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Paso del Águila , which is in a Miocene terrestrial sandstone in the San Nicolás Formation of Mexico.

I. Ferrusquía-Villafranca et al. 2014Larger overall size (UTRL = 158 mm) than P. mirabilis, P. pernix, P. fossulatus, P. sp. cf. P. fossulatus, and P. tehonensis, but smaller than P. nobilis; P2-M3 caballine fold absent (at least at very early to early wear stages) and bear a much larger and wider postprotoconal valley (close to that of P2-4 in P. fossulatus); small, unrimmed and constricted/divided DPOF differing from that of P. mirabilis, P. pernix, P. nobilis, P. fossulatus and Pliohippus sp. cf. P. fossulatus; shallow, simple (not- compertamentalized) malar fossa differing from that of
P. mirabilis, P. nobilis, P. fossulatus, and Pliohippus sp. cf. P. fossulatus.
