Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
K.-H. Fischer 1977 (Rhinocerolophiodon)Medium in size. Dental formula like Lophiodon, but no diastema; frontal skull shortened. Nasomaxilla incisura not as deep carved in as in Lophiodon. Bridge of the nose, especially anterior part of nasale very narrow. Aperture nasalis dorsal not as wide as in Lophiodon. Canines small, not bigger than upper and lower I3, does not take part in increasing width of the snout. Upper molars with rhinoceros-like metacone, which labial border is slightly rippled, mesostyle absent, no cingulum labial and lingual. Upper P with only one inner cusp, which may unify proto-and hypocon, from this proto-hypocone some not quite complete ridges V-shapedly lead to the outer border of P3 and P4; P2 has a weak ridge-like inner cusp; metaconule of upper P3 and P4 shows the tendency of a strong development. Lower molars typically rhinoceros-like, because of a pronounced strong anterior ridge of hypoconid; Lower M3-hypoconulid weaker than in other species. Lower P have no entoconid, so talonids not complete.
