Chimaera agassizii was named by Buckland (1835).

It was recombined as Chimaera (Ischyodon) agassizii by Agassiz (1843); it was recombined as Edaphodon agassizii by Woodward (1891); it was recombined as Edaphodon agassizi by Rapp (1946).
