Taxonomy
Porthochelys was named by Williston (1901) [Sepkoski's age data: K Coni-u Sepkoski's reference number: 987]. It is not extant. Its type is Porthochelys laticeps.

It was assigned to Toxochelyidae by Hay (1905) and Hay (1930); to Toxochelyinae by Zangerl (1953) and Weems (1988); and to Chelonia by Sepkoski (2002).
