Callicythere was named by Wei (1981) [Sepkoski's age data: C u Tr Indu Sepkoski's reference number: 648,ZR91]. Its type is Callicythere emeiensis.

It was assigned to Podocopida by Sepkoski (2002); to Cytherissinellidae by Crasquin (2008); and to Bythocytheridae by Forel (2013).
