Taxonomy
Canis zerda was named by Zimmermann (1780). It is extant.

It was recombined as Fennecus zerda by Bertram and Biewener (1990); it was recombined as Vulpes zerda by Zimmerman (1780), van Gelder (1978), Sillero et al. (2004), Wang et al. (2008) and Burgin et al. (2018).
