Taxonomy
Formicium was named by Westwood (1854). It is the type genus of Formiciinae. It was considered polyphyletic by Archibald et al. (2011).
It was assigned to Pseudosiricinae by Cockerell (1921); to Pseudosiricidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Formiciinae by Lutz (1986), Bolton (2003), Wappler (2003), Blank et al. (2009), Archibald et al. (2011) and Bolton (2012).
