Samotherium was named by Forsyth Major (1888). It is not extant.

It was assigned to Palaeotragini by Kostopoulos (2009); to Palaeotraginae by Mitchell and Skinner (2003), Harris et al. (2010); and to Giraffidae by Carroll (1988), Geraads (2017).
