Cephalogale was named by Jourdan (1862) [type European C. geoffroyi].

It was assigned to Ursidae by Jourdan (1862), Carroll (1988); to Hemicyoninae by Hunt (1998); to Ursoidea by Wang et al. (2005); and to Cephalogalini by de Bonis (2013), de Bonis et al. (2019).
