Desmatochelys was named by Williston (1894) [Sepkoski's age data: K Turo-l K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 1066,1069]. Its type is Desmatochelys lowii. It is the type genus of Desmatochelyidae.
It was assigned to Desmatochelyinae by Weems (1988); to Cheloniidae by Carroll (1988); to Chelonioidea by Hooks (1998); to Chelonia by Sepkoski (2002); to Desmatochelyidae by Hay (1902), Hay (1930), Nicholls (1992), Elliott et al. (1997), Nicholls and Meckert (2002); to Dermochelyoidae by Bardet et al. (2013); and to Protostegidae by Hirayama (1995), de Lapparent de Broin et al. (2014), Cadena and Parham (2015), López-Conde et al. (2019).
