Taxonomy
Thrissops was named by Agassiz (1833) [Sepkoski's age data: J Kimm-u J Tith-u Sepkoski's reference number: 452,915].

It was assigned to Psylopterygii by Wagner (1863); to Leptolepidae by Woodward (1895), Woodward (1919); to Ichthyodectidae by Patterson (1975), Patterson and Rosen (1977); to Pachycormiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Ichthyodectiformes by Cavin et al. (2013); and to Allothrissopidae by van der Laan (2019).

Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
J. Wagner 1863Dorsal fin. Set far back, opposite the very long anal fin, the inner rays of the caudal fin obliquely and step-like segmented behind the base; the mouth strongly upturned, the jaws equipped with fine teeth.

Agassiz identified five species from the lithographic shales as Thrissips formosus, cephalus, salmoneus, subovatus, and mesogaster. These fish are most numerous near Eichstädt and Kelheim. They are very rare near Nusplingen, but more frequently near Cirin, where Thiolliere suspected the occurrence of Thr. formosus, salmoneus, mesogaster, and cephalus, and also proposed two new species as Thr. Heckeli and Ragleyi. — Of the species he listed, Agassiz only illustrated and described in detail the first two (1). I have arranged these Thrissips species as follows.

i) Body shape relatively broad, caudal fin very long and deeply forked.

1) Heckel later also classified his Chirocentrites microdon (from Tertiary strata of the island of Lesina in Dalmatia) as Thrissops, which I consider incorrect, since that species possesses neither blind fin rays nor the coronoid process of the lower jaw, but instead has serrations on the preopercle that are not found in Thrissops; moreover, its scales are decidedly without enamel coatings.
