Sta. 2029 - Caw Caw Swamp [McBean Fm] (Eocene of the United States)

Where: Orangeburg County, South Carolina (33.5° N, 80.9° W: paleocoordinates 33.6° N, 71.8° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: McBean Formation, Bartonian (41.3 - 38.0 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From the McBean Fm, which regionally unconformably overlies the Black Mingo Fm (Paleocene) and is locally unconformably overlain by the Brandywine Fm (Pleistocene); the formation is laterally equialent to the Nanjemoy Fm and the Claiborne Gp. AGE: Bartonian, on the basis of recent biostratigraphic dating. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From either bed 1 or 2 in section.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: coastal; unlithified, shelly/skeletal, green, red sandstone and poorly lithified, shelly/skeletal, green claystone

• ENVIRONMENT: Shallow marine, shelfal siliciclastic.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Fine bright-red (originally green) sand with pockets of shells, or green clay with pockets of shells. LITHIFICATION: Unlithified, on the basis of facies description.

Size class: macrofossils
