It was recombined as Arctocephalus cinereus by Gray (1850), Gray (1871) and Gray (1873); it was recombined as Arctocephalus cinerea by Gray (1866); it was recombined as Eumetopias cinerea by Turner (1912); it was recombined as Neophoca cinerea by Scheffer and Rice (1963), Repenning and Tedford (1977), Riedman (1990), Ling (1992), Deméré et al. (2003), Wilson and Reeder (2005), Cullen et al. (2014) and Berta et al. (2018).
