Ausktribosphenos was named by Rich et al. (1997). Its type is Ausktribosphenos nyktos. It is the type genus of Ausktribosphenidae.
It was assigned to Ausktribosphenidae by Rich et al. (1997), Rich (2002) and Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004); and to Australosphenida by Rauhut et al. (2002) and Martin and Rauhut (2005).
