Taxonomy
Pentagonaster texensis was named by Adkins and Winton (1920). It is not extant. Its type specimen is Texas Christian University, Holotype TCU 1056.

It was recombined as Crateraster texensis by Blake and Reid (1998).

D. B. Blake and R. Reid 1998Body stellate, flattened, interbrachial arcs evenly concave from arm tip to arm tip, arms triangular in outline. R about 20-25mm, r about 15-16 mm. Abactinals stout, subpaxillate, closely arranged so that crown outline can be polygonal; crown surface flat to slightly arched, with low pustules bearing small granules; column cross section polygonal, basal facets small. Interbrachial abactinals of carinal ring significantly enlarged, next radial interbrachials somewhat enlarged. Madreporite polygonal, positioned immediately abradial to carinal ring. Marginals rectangular, robust, forming stout body margins; marginals paired or slightly alternate, six to nine from interbrachial radius to arm tip; ossicular size in series diminishing evenly but significantly toward tip. Superomarginals abut at arm mid-line beginning at second marginal in smaller individuals to third or fourth in larger, with some variation from arm to arm. Superomarginals wider than long, outer surfaces evenly curved toward ambitus, arched, only weakly impressed at ossicular boundaries, closely covered by granules. Inferomarginals wider than long interbrachially becoming equal then longer than wide distally; interbrachial pairs significantly wider than long, extending onto actinal surface. Inferomarginal outer surface topography similar to that of superomarginals, granulate near superomarginal contact, with short spinelets on remainder of surface. Enlarged spine bases absent. Actinals polygonal, closely fitted, in two rows in smaller specimens, three in larger; row adjacent to adambulacrals reaching to first or second arm inferomarginal, series terminating near to or corresponding with position where superomarginals abut on dorsal surface; third row (where developed) restricted to interbrachial area. Actinals spinelets similar to those of inferomarginals. Adambulacrals short, high, outline approximately square; furrow prominence small, furrow spine row of five to seven elongate slender, similar attenuated to weakly palmate spinelets; probably two rows of subambulacral rows of similar spines. Ambulacrals robust, adradial end of ossicles low, triangular, overlapping that of next proximal ossicle; ambulacral-adambulacral articulation structures bilateral about vertical plane. First ambulacral short, radial articular processes not divergent. Mouth angle ossicle small, high, triangular, with spines bases restricted to ventral edge, inter MAO articulation depressions large. Terminal outline elongate, pointed proximally, finely pustulate, perhaps with small spine at tip.
