Aulophyseter mediatlanticus

Taxonomy
Paracetus mediatlanticus was named by Cope (1895) [The USNM database lists USNM 10594 as the type, but Kazar (2002) lists USNM 9463 as the type.]. Its type specimen is USNM 10594 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Drum Point, which is in a Tortonian offshore shelf horizon in the St Marys Formation of Maryland.

It was recombined as Diaphorocetus mediatlanticus by Trouessart (1898), Trouessart (1904), Sellards (1915) and Allen (1921); it was recombined as Hypocetus mediatlanticus by Hay (1902); it was recombined as Hypocetus atlanticus by Case (1904); it was recombined as Orycterocetus mediatlanticus by Kellogg (1925), Hay (1930) and Gottfried et al. (1994); it was recombined as Aulophyseter mediatlanticus by Kazár (2002), Uhen et al. (2008) and Godfrey and Lambert (2023).
