Taxonomy
Sagmatias was named by Cope (1866). It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Weber (1928).
It was synonymized subjectively with Lagenorhynchus by McKenna and Bell (1997) and Mead and Brownell (2005).
It was assigned to Delphininae by Gill (1871), Gill (1872) and Weber (1928); to Lissodelphinae by LeDuc et al. (1999) and Fordyce and de Muizon (2001); to Delphinidae by Scammon and Cope (1869), Cope (1890), Trouessart (1904), Palmer (1904) and Murakami et al. (2014); and to Lissodelphininae by Perrin et al. (2013) and Vollmer et al. (2019).
