Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
R. L. Squires 2011Shell size moderately small to large (up to height 150 mm). Last whorl expanding rapidly in size and basally abruptly constricted (pyriform to napiform). Spire nearly flat, low, or very moderately elevated (1/5 of total shell height). Protoconch paucispiral (1.25-2.5 whorls), conical and broad or erect and somewhat bulbous. Protoconch whorls smooth, rounded, and gradational with teleoconch. Teleoconch up to approximately five whorls (commonly three to four). Suture deeply impressed, weakly channeled, or canaliculated. Subsutural collar weak to strong (welt) or obsolete. Early whorls with short to long, straight or slightly concave ramp or shouldered to subshouldered with whorl faces steep-sided to lowly rounded. Last whorl can be mono-angulate (shoulder only), biangulate, triangulate, or with all spiral ribs equant; spiral ribs noded or tuberculate, with or without secondary spiral ribs in interspaces. Collabral ribs weak to obsolete. Ramp on last whorl short to long and smooth, or bearing spiral ribs. Last whorl peripherally well rounded or straight. Early whorls and last whorl can have cancellate sculpture, beginning on first whorl with low number of spiral ribs, continuing across swollen portion of last whorl with moderate number of spiral ribs, widely and equally spaced and intersected by widely and equally spaced collabral ribs with nodes forming at their intersections. Siphonal canal straight, narrow, moderately long to long, and comprising about one-third to one-half of total shell height; canal smooth or with numerous spiral ribs, decreasing in strength toward anterior end of shell. Aperture broadly ovate to subovate. Posterior notch moderately weak or well developed. Columella smooth, concave or straight. Inner lip (including parietal area) with thin or heavy callus. Aperture uncommonly with very narrow chink. Growth line over upper whorl face or ramp gently to strongly prosocline, orthocline, or sigmoidal; gently to arcuate opisthocline over rounded outer whorl face; orthocline on neck. Growth line can form incremental imbrication
