Porata was named by Seilacher (1962). It is not extant.

It was reranked as the suborder Porata by Rigby and Potter (1986), Rigby et al. (1988) and Senowbari-Daryan and Stanley (1998).

It was assigned to Sphinctozoa by Rigby and Potter (1986) and Rigby et al. (1988); to Calcarea by Boiko et al. (1991); and to Permosphincta by Senowbari-Daryan and Stanley (1998).
