Probathyopsis lysitensis was named by Kelley and Wood (1954). Its type specimen is AM 11167, a set of teeth, and it is not a trace fossil.
It was recombined as Prodinoceras lysitensis by Dashzeveg (1982) and Lucas and Schoch (1998).
