Miobasileus ophryas was named by Cope (1873). It is the type species of Miobasileus.
It was recombined as Symborodon ophryas by Cope (1875); it was recombined as Titanotherium ophryas by Osborn (1896); it was recombined as Brontotherium ophryas by Hay (1902); it was considered a nomen dubium by Osborn (1929).
