Taxonomy
Meryceros major was named by Frick (1937). Its type specimen is F:AM 31439, a partial skull (Left horn, proximal end of shaft missing), and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Merycodus major by Voorhies (1990) and Janis and Manning (1998).
