Lanxangichthys alticephalus

Taxonomy
Lanxangichthys alticephalus was named by Cavin et al. (2019). Its type specimen is MDS BLT97-08, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Ban Lam Thoy, which is in an Aptian/Albian terrestrial horizon in the Grès supérieurs Formation of Laos. It is the type species of Lanxangichthys.

L. Cavin et al. 2019Lepisosteiform ginglymodian differing from all other members of the family by the following combination of characters: short and deep head; frontal elongated and as wide anteriorly as posteriorly; dermopterotic tapering anteriorly and more elongated than the parietal; first anterior infraorbital bone very deep and narrow; second anterior infraorbital large and squarish, with the anteroventral corner excavated to fit with the small, squarish anterior third infraorbital; suborbitals arranged in a mosaic pattern; preopercle with a long and broad vertical limb with parallel margins.
