Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
M. S. de la Fuente et al. 2022Gestemys powelli can be diagnosed as a pelomedusoid due to: the presence of a processus trochlearis pterygoidei; the quadrate ventral process extending medially to the braincase below the cranioquadrate space; a foramen palatinum posterius that lies behind the orbit; a condyles mandibularis anterior to the basioccipital– basisphenoid suture; prefrontals meeting at the midline; the absence of parietal–squamosal contact; the absence of a cervical scute; rounded and equidimensional mesoplastra; and a pelvic girdle that is attached suturally to the shell. The new taxon can be attributed to Podocnemididae due to: its fully developed and medially extensive cavum pterygoidei; an incisura columellae auris enclosing the stapes and Eustachian tube; and the absence of exoccipital–quadrate contact.
