Taxonomy
Macrourites longimanatus was named by Schlotheim (1822). It is the type species of Mecochirus.

It was recombined as Mecochirus longimanatus by Garassino and Schweigert (2006), Schweitzer et al. (2009), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Charbonnier and Garassino (2012), Feldmann et al. (2015) and Odin et al. (2019).
