Paraphaenogaster freihauti was named by Jessen (2020). Its type specimen is NHMM-PE1995/8758-LS, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Enspel, horizon S14, which is in a MP 28 crater lake shale in Germany.
