Johnlongia was named by Siverson (1996). Its type is Johnlongia allocotodon.
It was assigned to Odontaspidae by Underwood (2004); to Odontaspididae by Siverson (1996), Cicimurri (2003), Shimada et al. (2004), Shimada et al. (2006), Cook et al. (2008), Guinot et al. (2013) and Cook et al. (2013); and to Johnlonginae by Shimada et al. (2015).
It was assigned to Odontaspidae by Underwood (2004); to Odontaspididae by Siverson (1996), Cicimurri (2003), Shimada et al. (2004), Shimada et al. (2006), Cook et al. (2008), Guinot et al. (2013) and Cook et al. (2013); and to Johnlonginae by Shimada et al. (2015).
