Taxonomy
Homacodon was named by Marsh (1872). Its type is Homacodon vagans.

It was assigned to Dichobunidae by Scott (1913); to Artiodactyla by Marsh (1872) and Carroll (1988); to Homacodontini by McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Homacodontidae by Hay (1902) and Theodor et al. (2007).
