Pareumys was named by Peterson (1919). It is not extant. Its type is Pareumys milleri.

It was assigned to Muridae by Peterson (1919); and to Cylindrodontidae by Korth (1994), McKenna and Bell (1997) and Lofgren et al. (2020).
