Schizopyga californiana was named by Conrad (1856) [TYPE LOCALITY: California; Merced Fm (L. Pliocene).].

It was corrected as Schizopyga californica by Tryon (1882); it was recombined as Nassa californiana by Arnold (1909); it was recombined as Nassarius californianus by Hanna and Hertlein (1932); it was recombined as Nassarius (Schizopyga) californiana by Willett (1937); it was recombined as Nassarius (Demondia) californianus by Addicott (1965); it was recombined as Caesia californiana by Hendy (2021).
