Pholadomya kernensis was named by Wiedey (1928). Its type specimen is Leland Stanford Junior University 437, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is LSJU loc. 438, which is in a Miocene coastal sandstone in the Temblor Formation of California.
