Brachystelechidae was named by Carroll and Gaskill (1978). It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Huttenlocker et al. (2013).
It was assigned to Microbrachomorpha by Carroll and Gaskill (1978), Carroll (1988) and Carroll et al. (1998); and to Recumbirostra by Huttenlocker et al. (2013).
