Anas caerulescens was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.

It was recombined as Chen caerulescens by Hay (1930), Guthrie (1992) and Broughton (2004); it was recombined as Chen (Chen) caerulescens by Wetmore (1940); it was recombined as Anser caerulescens by Clements et al. (2017).
