Chenoanas deserta was named by Zelenkov (2012). Its type specimen is PIN, no. 4869/196, a limb element (proximal frag), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Sharga 2, which is in a Serravallian terrestrial horizon in the Oshin Formation of Mongolia.
