Taxonomy

Strix noctua was named by Scopoli (1769). It is extant.

It was recombined as Athene noctua by Boule and De Villeneuve (1927), Worthy (1997), Seguí et al. (1997), Mlikovsky (2002), Bedetti and Pavia (2007), Bedetti and Pavia (2013), Clements et al. (2017) and Carrera et al. (2018).
