It was assigned to Thunnidae by David (1943) and Danil'chenko (1960); to Scomberoidei by Purdy et al. (2001); to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Thunninae by Starks (1910), Klawe (1977), Bannikov (1979), Collette et al. (2001), Monsch (2004), Serdy (2004) and Monsch and Bannikov (2011); and to Scombridae by Danil'chenko (1980), Fierstine et al. (2012), Hastings and Dooley (2017) and Carnevale and Godfrey (2018).

K. A. Monsch and A. F. Bannikov 2011 | Body deep and fusiform. Small teeth. Fron- toparietal fenestra and pineal window present. First vertebra completely sutured to skull. Preural vertebrae 2–3 strongly shortened. Recent species with 39 vertebrae. Fossil species possibly of Thunnus have less or more vertebrae (see below). First dorsal fin with 11–14 spines, second dorsal fin with 12–16 rays. 7–10 finlets both above and below. Pectoral fin with 30–36 rays. |
