Izuus was named by Tokunaga and Saito (1938) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. Its type is Izuus nakamurai.

It was assigned to Pomacentridae by Tokunaga and Saito (1938) and Bellwood and Sorbini (1996); and to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002).
