Hemerocoetes was named by Cuvier and Valenciennes (1837) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Percophidae by Schwarzhans et al. (2017); and to Hemerocoetidae by Schwarzhans (1980) and Schwarzhans (2019).
