Taxonomy
Cystostroma was named by Galloway and St Jean (1957). Its type is Cystostroma vermontense.

It was assigned to Labechiidae by Nestor (1964); to Rosenellidae by Bolton (1988) and Stearn et al. (1999); and to Stromatoporoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
