Taxonomy
Protophites vannii was named by Bert (2003). Its type specimen is Bert AF23, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Montagne du Cheiron, bed 100d, Bézaudun-les-Alpes, which is in an Oxfordian marine marl in France.
