Airtonia was named by Cope (1934) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1]. It is the type genus of Airtoniinae.

It was assigned to Airtoniinae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
