Taxonomy
Butovicellidae was named by Kríž (1965) [m. kosnik taxon no: 5077].

It was synonymized subjectively with Modiomorphidae by Bouchet et al. (2010); it was reranked as the subfamily Butovicellinae by Carter et al. (2011).

It was assigned to Praecardiacea by Vokes (1980); to Antipleuroidea by Nevesskaja (2009); and to Modiomorphidae by Carter et al. (2011).
