Taxonomy
Cleithrolepis extoni was named by Woodward (1888). Its type specimen is BMNH P5455, a skeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Rouxville area, which is in a Carnian fluvial-lacustrine sandstone in South Africa.
