Onychodontidae was named by Woodward (1891). It is not extant. Its type is Onychodus.

It was assigned to Crossopterygii by Woodward (1891); to Rhipidistia by Hay (1902); to Rhipidistia by Jordan (1963); to Onychodontia by Anderson (2001); to Onychodontida by Young and Schultze (2005) and Nelson et al. (2016); and to Onychodontiformes by Lu and Zhu (2010) and Mann et al. (2017).
