Eriphia was named by Latreille (1817) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l R]. It is extant. Its type is Cancer spinifrons. It is the type genus of Eriphioidea, Eriphiidae.
It was assigned to Menippinae by Karasawa (1990); to Eriphinae by Dana (1851) and Karasawa (1993); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Xanthidae by Garassino et al. (2004); and to Eriphiidae by Karasawa and Schweitzer (2006), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Luque et al. (2017) and Schweitzer et al. (2020).
