Taxonomy
Trilobites bituminosus was named by Schlotheim (1820). It is the type species of Janassa.

It was recombined as Janassa bituminosus by Woodward (1889) and Hay (1902); it was recombined as Janassa bituminosa by Münster (1839), Geinitz (1861), Hancock and Howse (1870), Holzapfel and Malzahn (1984) and Diedrich (2009).
