Clavagella was named by Blainville (1817) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno R]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Pholadomyoida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Clavagellidae by Cox et al. (1969), Maxwell (1978), Vokes (1980), Jones and Nicol (1989), Wienrich (1999) and Bouchet et al. (2010).
