Pliocardia was named by Woodring (1925) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi].

It was assigned to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); to Vesicomyidae by Vokes (1980) and Amano and Kiel (2007); to Pliocardiidae by Bouchet et al. (2010); and to Pliocardiinae by Amano et al. (2019).
