Conocyathus fenestratus was named by Tenison-Woods (1878). Its type locality is Muddy Creek (Tenison-Woods collection), which is in a Langhian marine marl in the Port Campbell Limestone Formation of Australia.
It was recombined as Trematotrochus fenestratus by Cairns (1997).
